Wave House Party

Clarence was invited to his classmate Aidan's birthday party in July. He was very adventurous. He tried the flow board instead of body board. Well done. His best shot!

Drum trial lesson

Clarence went for drum trial lesson on 24th Nov. After the trial, he decided to give up his singing class for drum lessons. We told him to choose one between the 2 cos we dun want him to spend too much time on these enrichment. He has time for all these enrichment classes because he is not going for any tuition classes at the moment. As far as we can, we hope to delay tuition classes for as long as possible. His tuition teachers now are mummy and daddy at home.

He chose a pair of red drum stick for himself.

Reward time

This is Clarence's reward for his SA2 Maths.

His motivation: Get 90 marks and above in any paper and he gets to choose something he likes.
He managed to get above 90 for Maths so he chose to buy Skylander Swap Force.
We were very pleased with his SA2 Maths. He scored 95, this is his personal best so far. Well done, son.
He was so funny, the moment he got the exam paper, he looked at the marks and was pleasantly surprised he got 95. His next reaction: look at the name on the script to make sure it was his.

Little rocker

Clarence is preparing for his grade 2 rock school electric guitar exam next year. He will be skipping the grade 1 exam as recommended by his teacher. He has just finished learning his first piece titled "Cranked". Need to prepare 2 more pieces.
Playing "Cranked" with background drums (CD), recorded by daddy yesterday.

Surprisingly, he is willing to go for the rock school (electric guitar) exam when his teacher asked him to cos he refused to go for guitar ABRSM exam previously when he was learning the guitar. Anyway he has stopped learning guitar few months ago cos his interest is still in electric guitar.

CH Family Day cum Homecoming 2013

The CH Family Day cum Homecoming is an yearly event for my boy. We went earlier this year and Clarence went off to play his favourite Nerf gun with his friends while we enjoyed the food in the canteen.
Did not take much pictures this year. Posted this interesting game that Clarence played. Awesome game:

Spent all our coupons then it is home sweet home time.

Clarence and shoelaces

His old pair of shoes was too small for him so we gave him a new pair, one with shoelaces. That day after school when I picked him, he looked very grouchy. He hated the shoelaces cos they kept coming off despite him tying them back again and again. He did not want to wear them anymore.

Daddy came home in the evening and tied a dead knot for the shoes so now Clarence just need to slip his feet in.
So the problem was: mummy did a lousy job in the morning tying his shoelaces for him. Oops!

Science holiday homework

Clarence brought a packet of soil, a pot and some seeds home on the last day of term 2. His Science holiday homework: to grow sunflower seeds and observe. He excitedly followed instructions from Daddy and both of them planted the seeds inside:

After a few days:

On 16 June:

On 25 June:

His plant is growing very well. Thought it was an interesting piece of homework, teaching kids about responsibility of taking care of the plant and observation skills and know more about the various parts of the plant.
I initially thought it was easy to grow the plant until some parents whatsapp then I realised most of his classmates plants did not grow at all. So it was not that easy after all.
Are we just lucky or should I give the credit to Daddy?

First electric guitar recital

Clarence was recommended by his teacher to go for a music recital organised by the music school. It is a platform for their students to exhibit what they have learnt. He will be playing real band with other guitarists, singer and drummer from the music school. Went for 2 rehearsals and these photos were taken during the recent rehearsal.

The actual performance day: 23 June 2013
He was the youngest in the band. My little rocker:

Video of the song they were performing: pumped up kicks

Well done, son!

Clarence VS Daddy (Velocity Beach Rush 2013)

We walked past Velocity on 1 June and saw people playing inside the Velocity Beach Rush. We found that it was FOC that morning since there was no crowd (actually need to pay to play normally). Clarence was gamed enough to try so off he went. At the first station, Clarence need to stand on the pole, balance and kick the ball in but it was too difficult for him. Daddy was complaining about how lousy Clarence was so he was invited to attempt too. Hence, daddy was in the game. Very sporting father and son.
Gearing up:

Clarence VS Daddy:

Super hard station.
Watch how my dear struggled:

Only Clarence tried this. Need to rearrange the items exactly like the one on the side with the rubber belt pulling you back.

The most interesting segment in the game: Being a hamster in the water!

Clarence was better than Daddy in this.

His first try:

Got the hang of it, so much faster in his second try:

Balancing on the machine operated wave board: Both failed badly. Hahaha!

Another game: shooting the bird. Only Clarence tried this.

Both father and son were wet after the beach rush challenge. As they did not have spare clothes to change into, they sat on newspapers in the car to avoid wetting the seats.

Track and Field training

Clarence went to school with me during the March holidays for my CCA duty, Track and Field. He was invited by the coach to train with the girls. He was hesitant and shy at first and kept sticking to me cos he was the only boy there but he was fine after a while. This was his first time trying out track and field. His school does not offer this CCA.
Learned how to get into the "On your mark" position:

Competing with the gals:

First time trying out long jump:

He was all sweaty after the 2 hour training. Good exercise for him.

Into pop songs

Clarence is very into pop songs since a few months back. He requested for his piano teacher to teach him "Kiss Goodbye" by Lee Hom in March. He learnt how to play accompaniment for the song.
Video recorded on 17 March:

Vocal trial class (17 March)

Clarence requested us to send him for vocal training class cos we always laughed at him when he sang out of tune.
His trial class:

I sat in with him during the trial class and actually expected him to call it quits after that but he told me the class was ok and he wanted to learn. So we signed him up and his actual class has started in April. So far so good, he made some improvement, not so monotone and out of tune now.

First electric guitar trial lesson

Brought Clarence for his first electric guitar trial lesson at Academy of Rocks yesterday.
I sat in for the 30 mins lesson with him. As he already has foundation in classical guitar, the teacher commented that it was very easy to teach him and it's rare for a 8 yr old to be able to play the guitar so well. He asked Clarence if he is interested to take exams cos he thinks Clarence is the perfect candidate for exam. As expected, my son said No Exams.
Actually Clarence's classical guitar teacher has also been bugging him to take exams for classical guitar but he is just not keen in exams.

Playing to the tune of You and I both (Jason Mraz):

We signed Clarence up for electric guitar lessons and his class will start in Jan 2013.

Electric guitar

We bought an electric guitar and amplifier for Clarence last Saturday. I told him it was his Christmas gift. He has been learning classical guitar as a foundation since April. About time for him to start electric guitar. It is his dream to learn electric guitar all along. Now we are looking for teachers to teach him to play the electric guitar.

P2 SA 2 Report Book

It's the time of the year again to collect Clarence's report book. It is a summary of how he fare for the whole year academically. He did not meet my expectation especially for his maths paper. Lots of careless mistakes in his SA2 paper. Luckily the test marks pulled up his average marks. Phew!
English: 94
Higher Chinese: 95
Mathematics: 92
Total: 281/300 or 93.7%

Comments from his teacher was good this round: Clarence is an active and eloquent pupil. He is diligent and conscientious in his work. He consistently performs well in his studies and takes his work seriously, He is kind and helpful towards teachers and peers and gets along well with his classmates.

In my opinion, the whole cohort did not perform very well. Average for the level for Eng was 88.3, Chinese 85 and Mathematics 79.9. There was no streaming this year for the P2s. But he will be seperated from most of his classmates as they are promoted to different classes next year.
We were glad that Clarence scored above the average for all his subjects. Continue to work hard in 2013.

Health Zone Visit

My son volunteered me to be a parent volunteer to bring his class for Health Zone Visit. When his teacher asked for parent volunteers, my dear boy told her his mummy is on leave for the whole year......
So I have no choice but to help out, haha! Anyway, he was happy I could go and he chose to sit beside me on the bus to and fro.
Pictures of him there:
